Death of an alter-ego....

If any of you have clicked the AIF button on the menu on the left, you know that I'm into role playing games.  They are a way of inspiring creativity, a way to temporarily escape the pressures of normal life, and a way to imagine yourself in adventures that you'll never see in real life.

Most of the games we do range from one-nighters to games that last a few weeks or months.  When we were all in high school and had more free time than god, we played the really long games that lasted months and months.  But since we've grown up and gotten busy lives, it's hard to devote as much time to gaming.

So we try to replace quantity with quality.  Now to make it a real game, there has to be the possibility of losing - which usually means the character dies.  If we didn't have that condition, then the games wouldn't be nearly as fun.

Poor Jessica.

Clay and I have been playing this one game for over a year now.  It was about a sniper named Jessica.  She was human, with giant bat-wings attached to her allowing her to fly.  I won't go into the details of the game because they are just too complex.  She was one of the most enjoyable characters I've played.

Last night, we were playing and it was a deciding battle between her, and an organisation that had been hounding her for some time.  Both Clay and I realised, in order for the game to proceed, this battle had to be real in terms of the threat to Jessica's life.  No 'godly intervention' in this fight.  The battle was very close, but in the end Jessica fell.  If she hadn't have fallen in that instant, the battle would have turned to her favour an instant later.  But the dice were not with her.

Now in the grand scheme of real life, the death of an imaginary character means virtually nothing, but to lose a character that you've had so much fun playing for over a year...  well, I'm going to miss her.  Clay and I toyed with the idea of somehow bringing her back to life - the aforementioned 'godly intervention', but that just wouldn't feel right.  She died in battle, an honourable death, and it's best to leave it at that.

She will be missed.

And of course, the first time I have a picture of a nude woman on my web site, is the time that my mom decides to take a look...
