<sarcasm>Ahhh, Window 98...  What a wonderful piece of software.</sarcasm>

If you ever get recurring errors along the lines of "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down."  and when you look at the details it always seems to crash on a file called mmsystem.dll, then you might think that mmsystem.dll is corrupted and needs to be replaced.  Seems logical to me.   But, upon replacing the file, the errors still occur.  You entertain violent thoughts about the computer and a sledgehammer and start thinking about reinstalling windows.

At least that was what was going through my mind.  When the sound died and a couple of really important programs stopped working I got really pissed off.

When I finally got around to searching the Microsoft knowledge base for the error, I found that to fix the problem all you have to do is enter one tiny little line in the system.ini file.

One measly $$%^@# line.

I'm a computer professional and I have problems with these obscure errors.  I can't image what people with little or no computer expertise do.

(Well, aside from pay people like me to fix them.)
