Trip to Portugal - Monsaraz

On Sunday I drove north and east of Aljustrel to a small town called Monsaraz.  It is an old walled city on top of a hill overlooking the land.   From the city you can see for vast distances in all directions.

For most of these pictures, clicking on them will link to a full sized image.

These are the outer walls of Monsaraz

monsaraz_bells.jpg (240854 bytes) This is one of the entrances to the city.  The tower is what you see at the right of the picture above.
monsaraz_town.jpg (199421 bytes) The town is made up of a village area and a castle-like area.  Here we can see a portion of the village.
monsaraz_road1.jpg (240133 bytes) The next three pictures are views of the roads within the city.  They are all very narrow, with the ground paved in rocks.
monsaraz_road2.jpg (184368 bytes) A lot of the houses and buildings have the blue/white tiles you can see at the end of the road here.  Most of them are used to identify the building.
monsaraz_road3.jpg (240459 bytes) Yes, that's a cactus.
monsaraz_tower.jpg (234775 bytes) This is my favourite picture.  It is a tower in the castle-like area of the town.  It overlooks the town on one side and a coliseum area on the other.
monsaraz_collesium.jpg (249019 bytes) Here is one side of the coliseum.  This picture is taken from the top of the steps seen in the previous picture.
monsaraz_kennel.jpg (247158 bytes) The door shown here leads to the coliseum.  The stone structures here are hollow with an opening on the far side facing the door.   I'm guessing they kept animals (or people) here for use in the coliseum.
monsaraz_church.jpg (169152 bytes) This is the church.  While an impressive looking building on the outside, it pales in comparison to the inside.  The walls are all covered with intricate sculptures and designs.  The altar is an impressive floor to ceiling display of sculptures and designs of various Christian icons.
